It doesn't happen often. The summer football camp scene rarely produces that unexpected performance from a previously unknown talent. But when it does happen, you have to jump on it, and Rich Brooks and his staff hope...[details (http://kentucky.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=966146)]

Both Jeff Drummond and the always well-dressed Chip Cosby are reporting that Kentucky has received a verbal from 2011 athlete Jon Davis of Eastern. Davis, a 6′3″, 233 pounder with offers from Louisville, Illinois, Purdue, Stanford and Western Kentucky, attended the UK-UNC basketball game last weekend. The physical specimen is projected by Scout.com as a tight end but has also played running back, safety and linebacker in high school. Davis also received interest from Notre Dame, UCLA and Tennessee.

His commitment - the first from a 2011 prospect - also serves as a statement to new coach Cards coach Charlie Strong, fresh off the commitment of Seneca’s star QB DeMarcus Smith, that the Cats aren’t ready to give up Louisville yet. There will be some very good recruiting battles in that city the next few years.

Here's Cosby's article:

I saw Eastern play this year against Male. They fared well in the first half against a very good Bulldog team. (The second half was another story.)

Eastern took a 12-7 lead in the first half on a 6 yard Joe Kenn to Jon Davis touchdown pass. In that game Jon Davis had 5 receptions for 42 yards in the first half alone. I just pulled that up elsewhere, and I don't know what he did in the second half - I had to leave early. I do remember the TD catch though.

Davis seems to have all the gifts, including excellent size for someone who is just a junior. He could be a stellar collegiate tight end. And he has picked the right school for that position. James Whalen Jr. was a first team All American at UK as a tight end 10 years ago, and Jacob Tamme is now enjoying life as an Indianapolis Colt.

I love the thought of the things Joker's offense could do with Morgan Newton at QB and Jon Davis lined up at tight end in between Larod King or Randall Cobb and big Billy Joe Murphy or Dave Ulinski.

Eastern is the school that sent Myron Pryor to Kentucky. If Mr. Davis has the same success that Pryor had at UK, he'll be enjoying an NFL career afterward.

Eastern also produced Rondel Menendez, who set the record for the fastest 40 yard dash ever at an NFL combine, and Jerrod Hayden, who was a very good linebacker for Tennessee. Rajon Rondo also came out of Eastern, as did former Georgia head coach Hugh Durham, and former U of L and NBA player Felton Spencer.

The city of Louisville has been sizzling on the recruiting front since Charlie Strong was hired as the University of Louisville's new football coach last week. Strong immediately got a commitment from 2011 prospect DaMarcus Smith, a four-star quarterback from Seneca.

Kentucky responded by securing a commitment from another big-time junior, Eastern tight end Jon Davis. Strong then reeled in three more juniors from the Derby City on Wednesday: Ballard receiver DeVante Parker and the Fern Creek combo of Jerrell Moore and Jamon Brown.

Strong has obviously prioritized keeping the top prospects at home, and local recruits have been committing in droves. Davis' father, Reggie, said Strong has not yet contacted his son, but he expects Jon to honor his commitment to UK.

Reggie Davis is in the manufacturing business and says he's had to move every four or five years to advance his career, so the Davis family lived in New Jersey and Kansas before relocating to Louisville.
Davis pointed out that his son doesn't have the same hometown allegiance to U of L as the other kids who committed.
