I don't know how Strieby can miss being selected as an AA this year---nor Cohen the selection for COY. The Cats have swept two ranked teams in their recent rise to the top of the SEC. And this weekend against UGa at home will be perhaps their toughest challenge of the season. UGa has risen to no 11 on the basis of their recent strong play and they'll be at home. So the BatCats got to "went down to Georgia" and beat the devil outta them Dawgs. No. 4 ranking is so lofty that it's hard to believe it could go higher, but 2 or 3 wins as we close out the regular season could do it.

I saw a most familiar name there when I read that Strieby moved into first place in the nation with 74RBI's (with his 4 run homer against Belmont) and at the same time passed a very familiar name for the UK record number of RBI's in a season---that record was held since 1991 by Rick Norton with 72.

My son is a Miami graduate and always talks baseball when they're hot, which is most years. Now this year, Dad gets to do all the shooting off at the mouth--and I love it.

With his numbers so far he would seem to be a no-brainer for AA. My bigger concern is whether we haveany chance of him coming back next year.

I sat by a baseball coach at the game Sunday and he said we would be lucky to get Shelby back and the Strieby will go pro. I hope he doesn't know what he is talking about.

If guys stay four years in college they are 22 or 23 when they start in Rookie league and/or A ball. If a prospect hasn't made it to the big leagues by the time they're 25 - 27 they usually don't. These guys who play college ball have a small window of time to make it. So, for they're sake, I hope they both get drafted high next year. Besides, having our guys make it big will only help recruiting. Cohen has signed some great players so we won't see a whole lot of drop off. Now, that's not to say we'll see the same kind of run every year, but he is building for long term success. Let's face it; this team is accomplishing things that have never been done here before. This is truly a magical season that will hopefully get even more so.

Just like Ivory soap--99 and 99/100ths pure T sure to go. He's get a good draft and would be out of his gourd not to. Good to have him for this season though. For him not to get an early slot in the draft, he'd have to have a "pressure-fold" here at tournament time and that would send UK down the tubes. Don't want that. Don't expect that.

Strieby a Semifinalist for Howser Award

LEXINGTON – Kentucky junior Ryan Strieby has been named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, which is awarded to the National Player of the Year, it was announced Thursday.

Strieby is one of 16 players from across the country to make the cut and the only player from the Southeastern Conference. Currently, he leads UK in batting with a .347 average and has 18 home runs, which ranks third in the SEC. His 74 RBIs lead the nation and have already broken a 15-year old school record. He also leads the conference in doubles (20), on-base percentage (.476) and slugging (.729).
More importantly, Strieby has anchored the Wildcats lineup, which leads the SEC and ranks among the nation’s top 10 in scoring. He has helped lift Kentucky to the top of the SEC race and positioned the Wildcats for their first SEC Championship in school history.
The Dick Howser Trophy, given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987, is regarded by many as college baseball's most prestigious award.
Criteria for consideration for the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage, qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser's life.
A Florida native, Howser was twice an All-America shortstop at Florida State University (1957-58), then coached the Seminoles in 1979 after a career as a major league player and coach. After one year in the college ranks, Howser returned to the majors to manage the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals and won the World Series with the Royals in 1985. The baseball stadium on the Florida State campus is named for Howser.
The winner will be announced on June 16 in Omaha, Neb. Established in 1987, former Howser Trophy winners include Mike Fiore, Miami, 1987; Robin Ventura, Oklahoma State, 1988; Scott Bryant, Texas, 1989; Alex Fernandez, Miami-Dade Community College South, 1990; Frank Rodriguez, Howard College (Texas), 1991; Brooks Kieschnick, Texas, 1992 and 1993; Jason Varitek, Georgia Tech, 1994; Todd Helton, Tennessee, 1995; Kris Benson, Clemson, 1996; J. D. Drew, Florida State, 1997; Eddy Furniss, LSU, 1998; Jason Jennings, Baylor, 1999; Mark Teixeira, Georgia Tech, 2000; Mark Prior, P, USC, 2001, Khalil Greene, SS, Clemson, 2002; Rickey Weeks, 2B, Southern U., 2003; Jered Weaver, P, Long Beach State, 2004; and Alex Gordon, 3B, Nebraska, 2005.
