View Full Version : Yahoo! Mail or Gmail?
Which do you prefer?
I have accounts for both services but have been thinking about pulling the switch completely to Gmail. My main gripe with Yahoo right now is that they changed their main page. It is much more difficult to navigate. My second gripe is going to my email. It takes me to a tab of highlights of the day, I can put in a status (ala Facebook), and it just forces me to take one more step to get to my inbox. Petty, but I just want to read my email. I've been with Yahoo for probably 10 years now since I was a kid, so it's difficult to pull the trigger.
Gmail on the other hand seems fine. But I've never been totally impressed with the conversation-style emails. Could be that I just have to get use to it.

Gmail. Yahoo attracts spam like flies on poop.
Both, but I don't use my internet to check email. Emails are sent to my blackberry and marked read on Gmail and Yahoo!.

I use Yahoo and my wife uses Gmail. I like mine and she likes her's. I guess it's just a personal preference thing. Actually, most of my email comes to my Hotmail account. I like Hotmail better than Yahoo or Gmail.

No, actually it's not. Gmail's just better.

Really? I've really never had that experience with Yahoo. I guess in the past, but I primarily keep my email away from any and all things other than friends, family, etc.

My one Yahoo address gets about 200 pieces of spam a day. I have never given my e-mail address to anyone other than 4 people. Likewise, I've never had one piece of spam on Gmail yet under the same circumstances.

Like Josh, the Spam thing isn't a problem for me. Like I say though, my Hotmail account is my favorite.

I've got about 5 different email accounts on yahoo, hotmail (live) and gmail. The main ones that I use are gmail. The others I check weekly as I use them the most for a website where I do surveys.

Hotmail was my favorite too until the spam kicked in. (Completely my fault. Gave that address out to too many companies. Ugh. )
That, and some of these boards won't let you sign up with a hotmail account. Gmail works good for that.

For a daily use email program Gmail is much better. Not only is there almost no spam, you can use their pop settings for your local email client. I use Thunderbird for my email client and the Junk Mail settings are great to filter out any spam/junk email that does come in and route to the junk mail folder.
I have two Yahoo accounts as well and their purpose is mainly to use for when signing up on some site so any junk email they send goes there instead of my local email client.

I also experience this exact same thing.
I rarely use my Yahoo email and have only given it out to a handful of people, but yet I also get about 200 spam emails a day in the "Spam" folder. I also have another 4 or 5 a day that somehow miss their filter and make it into my "Inbox".
I don't have that problem with GMail. I only get a few Spam emails....and the filter works great when I do.
Yahoo has made some nice little improvements to their latest email....but I still prefer GMail. I've been using GMail the past few years and like it considerably better than I did Yahoo (when I was using it primarily).

I also use GMail with Thunderbird much the same way that you do.
When accessing GMail through the browser, I usually use Firefox. And Firefox has some nice "Add-On' features....like "GMail Notifier". It's an add-on that checks your email any frequency that you want to set it to (I have mine set for every minute). That way, almost as soon as an email hits my GMail inbox...I will get a notification and I can check it....

I saw that addon but I don't use my gmail enough to warrant doing that. Maybe a couple of email a month. I have my own domain that I receive the bulk of my email on. I do use a few addons though. Forecastbar Enhanced, Adblock Plus, cool iris, FireShot, Image Zoom and New Tab Homepage are the main ones.

Gmail, hands down. Gmail is without a doubt the best web-email provider out there. They have so many features and have innovated so many things in the way that web-email is done, that it's silly.
Likewise, I'll echo that I've had yahoo email addresses in the past, and I would get about 30 or 40 spam emails a day. Not only that, but the spam filter let a lot more of them into my inbox than gmail. With gmail, I get spam in my inbox maybe once a quarter. Not only that, but gmail has never once flagged a legit email as spam.
