What is the meaning/origin of the word "Chinoe"??
Is it a Native American word, someone's last name, what?

No, but you're close. It's supposedly someone's first name (I have no idea who) and it dates back to Fort Boonesborough - but not to the Boones themselves.
Of course, come to think of it, that person could have been named for whatever/whoever the actual origin is too for that matter. :shrug1:
But I'll go with a family name from Boonesborough. That's my final answer Regis.

Thanks, Dave.
I've got new neighbors - a married couple where the wife is from Nashville and the husband is from France, and they were asking me about it.
The funny thing is that when I first moved here, I was also confused. I'd hear friends say Chinoe, and I'd think they meant Shinno Way. Then I'd drive down Alumni and see signs for Chinoe Road and it never dawned on me that it was the same damn thing. Probably took me a year before someone took mercy and cleared up the confusion. Oh, and it didn't help that halfway down the street changes names for no apparent reason to "Greentree". lol

I see, thanks Dave. I just assumed it was a Native American tribe.

I know some natives around town that call it 'Shinoo Road'. Many visitors also look for a 'Way' as you mentioned. We've got some interesting roads around here I'll say that much.

Heh, back when I lived off Tates Creek Road and used to take Chinoe Rd to campus everyday to work, I wondered it as well.

I grew up in Lexington and have always referred to it as shinnoway, I've never heard it called anything else. Hopefully you don't have any trouble finding Ver-sales Rd instead of Vuhr-seye. :icon_mrgreen:

My friend just moved (okay, it was about 6 months ago) into the apartment complex behind the Kroger on Chinoe Road. He's new to Lexington, so he still pronounces things funny. For the first three weeks, he called it "Chee-no" road - like the pants.
