LEXINGTON, Ky. - Sorry, Chicago Cubs fans.
You can no longer count on a small legion of University of Kentucky baseball fans to share your pain.
For years you have lamented the fact that your beloved Cubbies haven't won a World Series since 1908. But at least they've actually won a World Championship - twice, actually.
Since the Southeastern Conference crowned Georgia as its first champion in 1933, UK is the only league school (other than Tulane, which left the SEC in 1966) that hasn't won a title.
So for the better part of 73 years, the Wildcats have been what the frugal Los Angeles Clippers are to the NBA and the New Orleans Saints are to the NFL.
"Kentucky baseball, people thought it was a club sport at one time," said second baseman John Shelby, a Lexington native who says attending UK was initially his last choice. "But now, everybody knows Kentucky's the real deal."
