View Full Version : Two HUGE plays that changed the game

In the bottom of the 7th with 1 out and the bases loaded, Georgia slugger Josh Morriss (the school's All-time home-run king), hit a slow grounder to Bertram at 3rd base.
Bertram was in the process of stepping on the bag at 3rd (and loading up to throw to 1st for the Double-Play), when the home plate umpire signalled that Morriss had fouled the ball off of his foot.
Maybe.
You don't get the benefit of the replay in person; but I will ask this question:
How often do you see a guy hit one off his foot that rolls all the way to 3rd?
Two pitches later, he hits a grand slam.
Then, in the bottom of the 8th, UGA had a runner on first and 1 out.
The batter hit a chopper to Shelby, just to the 1st base side of 2nd.
Instead of tagging the runner and throwing to 1st, Shelby ran three steps to his right touched 2nd, and then threw to 1st, with his momentum taking him away from the bag.
He still almost got him (I thought he did), but the runner was safe.
The next guy singled, then they intentionally walked Morriss (which put the go-ahead run on 2nd).
Then, Felmy singled in the tying and go ahead runs.

Maybe 100 (if that).
As typical, you have a lot of family (& girlfriends) that come.
Very quiet, too, IMO, but I think that is typical when you travel in the South.
The home fans get pretty rough.
In fact, in the first few innings, the ushers won't allow "home" fans to sit near the opposition's dugout.
By the end of the game, though, the whole section is full of Red, and they really let the UK players have it.

Something else that added to UK's problems was having the bases loaded in the top of the 7th inning and not scoring. That was UK's opportunity to go for the jugular and it didn't happen.
UK needs badly to win one or both games left as Tennessee is putting up no fight at all against Alabama. Bama is throwing a pitcher tonight who is 8-0 on the season and UT is starting a guy for the first time this season. We'll get no help at all from UT.

it is baseball, we all know that anything can happen. we can still win these last two games. alabama could lose, though it seems unlikely. however, in this sport no lead is safe. and for the first time in a long time, we can say thattalking aboutuk. yes, i kind of thought we had yesterday's game since our hitting started out so strong, but like i said, in baseball nothing is certain until the end. however, this team has proven that it can win against all odds, by sweeping some of the hottest teams in the nation, winning different series away, and only losing two series the whole year. they can win from behind, they can win on homeruns, they can win by their defense, and on some occasions, even their pitching. whatever happens, this is a uk team of which we can be proud. however, i am really hoping we can win at least one of these last two games and in baseball you just never know what is going to happen, which is part of the fun, but part of the reason it drives people crazy. GO BATCATS!!

No matter what happens the next two games, UK will end the regular season with more wins and less losses than any other SEC team. Now that's a huge achievement there and make me proud of my Bat Cats.

It would have had to bounce off his toe, probably.
For a ball to be hit that sharply, where the third basemen believes he can turn a double play, there's no way the ball would have been fouled off the "foot." It would have had to graze the toe and bound into fair territory, or perhaps off the outside of the foot (supposing, which I'm sure he is, that he's a right handed hitter).
That is, though, pretty unusual.
But, as the above poster said, in baseball anything can happen. It's a game of funny bounces and a good deal of luck.
