John T. Shelby III -- a cornerstone in the remarkable 2006 rebirth of University of Kentucky baseball -- was in Dodger Stadium the night Kirk Gibson reversed the plot line of Casey At The Bat by hitting a pinch homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to win Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.
If only Shelby could remember it.
His dad, John T. Shelby Jr., was the starting center fielder for the Cinderella '88 Dodgers of Lasorda, Gibson and Hershiser.
On that long-ago October night, as Gibson limped to the plate to face the "unhittable" Oakland relief ace Dennis Eckersley, little John T. Shelby, then 3, was in the Dodger Stadium "family lounge" being watched by his grandmothers.
