LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Chris Goode had considered himself more of a basketball talent than a football player, but that changed in one season.

Goode, a 6-foot-5 senior tight end from Dunwoody, Ga., caught the eye of football recruiters with a solid junior season and committed to the University of Kentucky on Sunday.

Goode helped Dunwoody win the AAA basketball championship last season, and his team should be a state-title contender again this season. But his future is in football, he acknowledged yesterday.

It makes me nervous when we get commitments from players who have no other offers than ours. Seems too much like just filling the bench. Our chances for a turn-around probably depend largely on landing some like Goode who turn out to be much better in college than most recruiters thought they were going to be, so maybe.....

I'm trying to remember the name of the Goode that we had at UK some years ago who was pretty Goode---Irvin or something like that?

Your are right on both points. Our chances do depend of finding players who turn out better than expected as we are unlikely to get many of the ones other school want. And there was an Irv Goode who played for UK. Maybe the 70ies.

It does not make me nervous when in October a kid is being recruited by some good programs, but we were the first to offer. Quite frankly, that is how UK needs to get some of these kids. They may not be tops on the lists of the other schools, but likely would get offers as the process plays out. UK assesses the talent and has to be in early to get a seat.

Also, a multi-sport star like this kid does not get too much time to just focus on football or spend the time in the weight room that others get. Therefore, he could very well blossom when he puts his other interests on the back burner.
