What happened over there? Anybody know?

I have no idea; but it is ashame. I would have hoped for a better treatment of Mel's legacy.

No disrespect to anyone, but I think Mel's legacy is over here.

As sad as it makes me to see it go. I believe your right.

Eh, too early to say anything for sure. It has only been down for one day.

If it's gone, I'm afraid I don't have much sympathy. WELL AFTER I sent in my resignation as a mod, she posted my name on several forums as a moderator; I have not signed on to that site as a member in months. I find that dishonest.

Which "other" site?

Although I was greatly dismayed at what happened at the "other site," let's be super-careful not to slip into slander here. :)

I believe you are correct. It is a sad thing though.

I've run a Jimmy Buffett site for 10 years, and about half way through I had lots of trouble and had to shut down for 3 weeks........perhaps the site will re-surface, it's hard to say.

The other site, as it was known, ceased to be the day that Mel passed away, but the reality is that many of us who left there to come over here carried the dream with us. So in a sense, the "other" site isn't dead- we're just a big family who decided to relocate. :thumbup

It may re-surface, true, but its heir is right here at WCN.

I hope you don't mind my asking, but what is the name of your Buffett site? I have been a fan for many years.

The "Faithful" had disappeared many a moon ago. It appears that it finally died a death that many knew was coming. Mel's family has went elsewhere and the spirit still lives on in all of us.

I've heard Mel's name mentioned many times on both sites but am not fortunate enough to have known the man or some of the things that made him special.

Would someone please enlighten me and others about Mel?

The other day, I accidentally went to "Faithful" and couldn't help but read a few threads. I'm so glad that most of the folks I used to chat with, I found here. This is just an AWESOME site. It was getting to the point where I felt like the mods at "Faithful" could here me fart, burp, whatever and would edit my air. I didn't need that. I never got to meet Mel, just talked some in the chat room during games and he seemed like he was a person that would open himself up to anyone and I admire that in people. Seemed Heaven got a good one in Mel.:wildcatface

Mel McCane was a UK alumnus and a huge fan.

Back when internet boards were in their infancy he decided to start an online community for UK fans. WildcatFaithful was the result.

In its prime it was the most visited, best known UK fan site on the internet, by far.

Mel put a lot of himself into building it and as a result a lot of good people have gotten to know each other and to talk UK sports with people they would never have met otherwise.

Despite financial pressures and opportunities Mel always refused to go the corporate route or allow the site to go commerical. It was always run by the fans for the fans and was always completely independent and autonomous. It more than held its own with the big corporate monoliths who came along later and tried to become the place to go. Mel's place was as much a community as it was an internet site.

Mel really built something special online but more importantly Mel was just a heck of a nice guy, a really good fellow, one of those people you're glad to have met and known.

Probably not dishonest so much as just apoorly managed site. I came over here from WCF (I think some wish I hadn't, but that's ok too) and I just don't feel the glee that some here exhibit at the problems our old site is having since Mel died.

I think the lady who took over PO'd some of the other key people from the site and they left with bitterness and it's carried over here. I just don't feel it. And as UK fans, I find it hard to believe that some enjoy the "demise" of a former great UK sports site. There were some great UK fans left "over there" who somehow didn't know how to get over to WCN and I think this whole thing has been a great loss for many of them. To me it's just a sad situation.

No offense, but knowing as little as you do about the situation maybe you should reserve passing judgement on anyone. More to it than you know, period.

If it is gone, then let it rest in peace. Lets close this out and move on.
