Marty is tough to listen to sometimes, and he can get pretty...surly in the booth, but he's still one of the best play by play guys in the business.

This should get every Reds fan pumped up, I think. :D

I told someone last night that to me their is nothing quite like listening to Marty call a walk of HR.Between that one and the Jr. walkoff in his first game back I haven't heardMarty that excited in a while.

Definitely sends chills down your spine.:thumbup:cool:

What's funny about that game last night is this: I wasn't watching.

I'm a firm believer that if you're a fan of a team, then you should watch the games. It irritates the crap out of me when I ask someone who they root for, and they tell me, and I say something about the team only to get this retort: "Yeah." They don't know what I'm talking about because they don't watch the games!

Maddening.

That ain't a fan, that's just someone who likes the team colors. (It's even more enraging when the guy says, "I've liked them since I was a kid." Yeah? Well, tell me the starting lineup.)*

I've Tivo'd or watched live 95% of the Reds' games this year, but when they got down 8-4 in the 9th last night, I waited until there was one out and turned it off.

Maybe that's a sign I should do that every night.

(*This is understandable if you live out of town and, you know, can't watch the games. I really feel for the people who can't watch UK play. That's a different story for a different thread, though.)

I don't get to watch as many Cubs games as I once could. WGN has sold their soul to the south-siders the past few years. :)

However, thank goodness for the advent of gamecasts. I'm already a geek, but now I get to spend about three more hrs./day in front of my computer, watching somebody's description of what's going on in the game. How do I know they're telling me the truth? Faith...you gotta have faith. Its pretty exciting...."Pitch 4 - In play, no out recorded" or "Pitch 4 - In play, run scoring play." You can almost see the action in your mind's eye...

I'd like to say something nice about the Reds here, but I'm a jealous fan so I'm just going to leave it at that.

Jody, sometimes I think you and I are the same guy. We're the same age. We like the same stuff. I don't want to get too sappy or anything, but it's almost as if we were...SEPARATED AT BIRTH!

Seriously though.

When I was in New York, I had to keep up with the Reds through Gamecast. It's a really interesting way to watch the game. There is, as you say, a lot of excitement to it. Weirdly. Baseball is one of those games that translates to a variety of medias. You definitely don't have to be watching live to get a feel for the suspense of the game.

Now, my wife isn't too pleased that the Reds are still contending for the division crown. By this time last year they were out of it and I was doing family stuff, you know. Now, every night at 7:10 I'm in front of the TV. I ain't gonna lie: we've had some tiffs over it.:nada:

Since I like threads that go off on tangents anyway, I'm going to send this baby on one.

Have you seen the movie Fever Pitch?

You know the scene where Jimmy Fallon's character misses the game toward the to go with Drew Barrymore, and he learns later that the Red Sox have won in magical fashion?

His reaction is anger. He's angry at Barrymore for making him miss that game.

That's fake. The only lull in what I thought was a pretty good romantic comedy.

Because if you really love a team, then you celebrate when they win -- whether you were there or not. Whether you were watching or not.

When my brother-in-law called last night to tell me what had happened, I was as ecstatic as if I had followed the Reds all the way home.

Ultimately, it's about winning. Nothing else really matters.

Haven't seen Fever Pitch. Probably only watched five or so movies the last couple of years. I do like Nick Hornby, though. In fact, I'm getting ready to start A Long Way Down, which I hear is going to be made into a movie as well.

I feel like I HAVE to be watching live in order for them to play as good as they can. Especially with Kentucky, football AND basketball. My work schedule (:X) does not allow for me to watch every game live...and when I'm listening on the radio, the shots don't seem to fall quite as frequently.

I do have one fantastic Cubs radio memory, though. It was October 10th, 2003, and I was driving to Marion, KY from Birmingham, AL. In fact, I was moving from Alabama back to Kentucky. I was driving solo, my wife behind me in her car, because she had to stay in Alabama for a few more months finishing up optometry school. We found an AM station that was broadcasting Game 3 of the NLCS, Cubs at Marlins, and believe it or not we both, in our separate vehicles, kept it on the same station for the entire drive, and when I pulled in to my parents' driveway (where I was going to be staying until my wife could join me upon graduation), Doug Glanville hit a triple which scored Kenny Lofton for the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th.

Two happy moments, simultaneously occurring...moving home and Cubs taking a 2-1 series lead. Doesn't matter what happened later....I'll always have that night!

Its a good thing you like tangents...I apologize if this is NOT where you wanted your thread to go.

To keep it on topic, that was a good call by Marty. :dude:

Tsk,Tsk. You have to stay with them.;)Actually I was turning back forth between games when they were down 7-0. After Castro hit his 3 run homer to get the Reds back in it I stayed with them. When Lopez got to the plate I had a feeling something good might happen. You could tell Wickman didn't have anything. I don't think I had ever seen a walk off Grand Slam before last night. It was the first walk off grand slam to win a game with two outs in the ninthin the majors since 2001. I heard Marty's call while driving around doing some errands this morning on ESPN radio. He has a great call of walk off homers. I still like him even though he gets a little ornery sometimes.
