View Full Version : Who Should Have Played Adolph Rupp in Glory Road

As I mentioned in another thread, I wasn't too impressed with the way that Jon Voight portrayed Rupp in the movie, Glory Road. I also didn't think that Voight looked much like Rupp, either. To me, Voight looked more like a clown than anything. With the fake hair, pillow under his shirt look, oversized suit and enough facial putty to repair a major dent in a car, he just looked like a cartoon instead of a real life character in the movie.
Having said that, who should have played Rupp in the movie? I've got a few suggestions.
Here's Voight in the movie:

And here's the real Adolph Rupp:

And here are my suggestions:
Fred Thompson from Law & Order

or the guy who plays Tony Soprano (name escapes me right now)

The movie went downhill sharply after the Rupp "character" entered the thing.
I don't know enough of the present day actors to select one to portray the great Coach Rupp in his true glory! Coach Rupp was more of a John Wayne type who had Harry Lancaster along to handle the rough physical stuff.

when the movie first came out I always thought Robert DeNiro would have made a great Rupp..

I believe Randy Quaid would be a good actor to play Coach Rupp.

Haven't seen the movie (and probably won't), but IMO, Robert Duvall could've pulled it off.

BILLY BARTY! that's hilarious!!!!:lol::lol: he's a screen/TV legend! what was he not in, in the 70's and early 80's?
Don't insult a superb visionary like Robert Duvall suggesting he would be in such a chicken s--t movie as this ilk! Fred Thompson either! Voight looks like a jackass, literally...Nester the christmas donkey....i hope he bought himself something nice with the $$$ he made on this piece of...."film"
IMHO, the movie shouldn't have been made...Remember the Titans 2...any movie with the Kentucky Wildcats in it is only gonna be a one sided biased impartial BASH-FEST!!!
UK - horrible, everybody else-pristine saints
....that's just the way 'tis! and we all know it!
why didn't they just use anonymous schools, it's great the color barrier was broken and despite the negative slant that UK was involved in such a milestone, but why not use anonymous schools and say "based on a true story" Lifetime does it all the time....but i guess that would be cutting UK some slack....oh well...serenity now, serenity now!!!!!!!!....damn the torpedoes, GO CATS!!!!

I got this movie as a gift from my wife about a week ago. IMO, it in no way denegrates UK. Hell, it doesn't even denegrate Rupp. Rather, it portrays as somewhat arrogant, but I'd gather that's not far from the mark.
If there's any criticism in the movie with regard to race, it's of Texas Western with regard to the school president and alum. Also, El Paso isn't portrayed positively with regard to race, but that also likely depicts much of the country at the time.
The most glaring fictional insertion in the movie is the numerous confederate flags seen in the crowd during the championship game, but THAT doesn't reflect on UK in particular, but on the sentiment held in much of the south at the time.
An excellent movie, nonetheless.

Fred Thompson couldn't play Rupp. He MUST play Phil Fulmer if a movie is ever made about UT football.

Speaking of Jon Voight, how did someone with that face and ears have a daughter like Angelina Jolie?
Sort of the same question regarding Steve Tyler and Liv Tyler.

Tell you the truth I was happy with Adolph Rupp on the movie not being portrayed as a racist. But I think that they should've had someone better. Also if I get to make an Adolph Rupp Movie who should portray Rupp in the future. And I don't Devito should be Rupp since Devito is a short guy.

Like someone mentioned, I was glad that Rupp wasn't portrayed as a racist, despite the pressure probably being there to have some kind of hint of it. Thankfully Pat Riley was there as a consultant. I also did not care for Voight as Rupp.
I know it's strange, but the first thing I thought when I saw the picture of Rupp in the first post was Danny DeVito's Penguin character on Batman Returns. Just take away the really long nose and black teeth. Not sure if that particular character would have exactly "fit" in Glory Road, though.
