LEXINGTON, Ky. - Kentucky finished 33rd in the final 2005-06 Directors’ Cup all-sports standings sponsored by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the United States Sports Academy, and USA Today. It was UK’s best showing in eight years.
This year’s final standings continued a trend of improvement for Kentucky, who finished 50th nationally in 2002-03, 45th in 2003-04, and 35th last year.
The Wildcats finished with the best showing since ranking No. 28 in 1997-98. Kentucky ranks seventh among Southeastern Conference teams, matching its best finish among league teams since 2001-02.
Schools are awarded points for each team reaching NCAA Tournament play, with higher finishes earning more points. In 2005-06, Kentucky earned points in these sports, with the national finish in parentheses.

Men’s basketball (T-17th nationally)
Women’s basketball (T-17th)
Gymnastics (T-19th)
Rifle (7th)
Women’s swimming (13th)
Men’s swimming (24th)
Baseball (T-17th)
Men’s Golf (5th)
Women’s tennis (T-9th)
Men’s tennis (T-33rd)
Volleyball (T-33rd)
Four Kentucky coaches were honored as the SEC Coach of the Year in their respective sports: volleyball’s Craig Skinner, women’s basketball’s Mickie DeMoss, baseball’s John Cohen, and diving’s Mike Lyden. Kentucky also claimed the school's first SEC baseball championship in 2006.
“I’m extremely proud of the many hours of preparation and the successes achieved by our student-athletes and coaches,” said Mitch Barnhart, UK Director of Athletics. “Our goal is to compete for championships in all sports, and we’re beginning to do just that. Our student-athletes and staff will build a broad-based program of which all Kentucky fans can be proud.”

Appears the basketball team held us down a little bit

The best part of that list is that U of L is 54th!

This 33rd ranking is for the spring sports only.....(i.e., not including basketball nor football).

In the fall when football was counted, UK did not make the top 86 listed

In the winter when basketball was counted, UK 41st

Being as generous as we can be....let's assume UK was 87 and just missed the cut:

(87+33+41)/3 = 54th for the 2006 year

Below I found numbers that show that UK was substantially better the two years previous to the arrival of Mitch

2000-2001 numbers were better (i.e., 2 years before Mitch)

Fall UK = 89

Winter UK = 21

Spring UK = 37

(89+21+41)/3 = 49th

2001-2002 numbers were better (i.e.,1 year before Mitch)

Fall UK = 78

Winter UK = 27

Spring UK = 36

average= 47th

Then we went into the tank with Mitch:

2002-2003 numbers were better (i.e.,1st year of Mitch)

Fall UK = 117

Winter UK = 54

Spring UK = 50

average= 74th

2003-2004 numbers were better (i.e.,2nd year of Mitch)

Fall UK = 75

Winter UK = 56

Spring UK = 45

average= 59th

2004-2005 numbers were better (i.e.,3rd year of Mitch)

Fall UK = 103

Winter UK = 43

Spring UK = 35

average= 60th

So 4 years at the helm and the great and wonderful Mitch has yet to even get us to the lame levels of Larry Ivy.

In fairness to Mitch, at least he has raised the ticket prices; something that Newton and Ivy were against......now that is progress. :lol:

Actually Mountain Cat the 33rd place ranking is for the entire year. While the final list only shows the scoring for the spring sports, the total points are for the entire year. Go ahead and add UK's point for the spring and see that they only equal 214 while UK's total for the year is 505.75. And we did this with less sports than schools like Stanford.

But hey feel free to keep slamming Mitch if it makes you feel better. Just don't let the facts get in the way.

Dude why attack me?

I tried to do the math on that one. It appears that I erred, but I assure you it was an honest mistake. My point was that Mitch hasn't exactly set the world on fire at UK. We were in just as good of shape before he got here, and Larry Ivy wasn't exactly AD Hall of Fame material.

Under Larry:

37th & 36th

Under Mitch:

50th, 45th, 35th & 33rd

Conclusion: Either Larry was better than some professed, or Mitch is not as good.

"Dude why attack me?"

Simple enough. Because I see you taking cheap shots at Mitch and I disagree. Anyone who doesn't think Mitch is several steps up from Larry Ivey, is not seeing the whole picture.

It would seem that your opinion is that it is OK to attack other posters, if they don't agree with you. If that is your MO, then so be it. I will take it that it is not personal, just your style.

I am no Larry fan, so I will not defend him; but Mitch is not significantly better, IMO. If he is, then give me the stats to support your case. And please don't use the increased ticket prices for a "same" product as an improvement by Mitch. :lol:

The problem with arguing with you about this is that you have already decided on your opinion. Otherwise you would see the vast improvement in Women's basketball and baseball. But you have made it clear on other postings that you don't like Mitch. So what's to say?

Why do feel the need to argue with people just for having a different opinion? Just post your opinion, and enjoy the diversity of thought.

FWIW, I am no fan of chick ball, so I don't give Mitch much credit for fixing a sport that does not interest me.I am glad that the chicks are doing better, I just don't have much interest in watching because it is boring, IMO.

Baseball is boring too.

Get Basketball back to looking like a top-5 program and bring football to be a top 25 program with a legit shot at an SEC Championship and I will sign the petition for the renaming of Commonwealth for Mitch. --- But don't expect me to slap him on the back for chick-ball improvements.
