I love Jacob Tamme and I think he is a great talent. But I just don't see how he has produced enough on the field so far to be first team all-sec.

Leonard Pope is gone so I guess they had to pick somebody.

They obviously had to pick someone, but the fact that they picked Tamme speaks well for the young man. Just because Pope is gone does not mean that this is less of an honor.

I agree. I love it for Jacob and sure hope he ends the season 1st team, but I am surprised by the pick based on what he's done to this point. Let's hope the folks at ESPN know a lot more than we do.

Did you have someone else in mind? Who did you expect to see picked as the preseason All-SEC TE pick? And, to come to an answer, would you have to research the issue?

Yes I would. I just said, based on what I remember about Jacob last season (don't have the stats) on a team that struggled mightily in the passing game AND finished toward the bottom of the SEC pack, I was surprised to see him picked. Heck, it's a surprise when any player off UK is picked pre-season 1st team all-SEC because it doesn't happen very often. But isn't the burden of proof on those who name Tamme all-SEC? So, if you want to do the research and make the case for his selection, then go for it:)Like I said, I'm a willing convert to jump on the "Jacob Tamme for 1st team All-SEC" bandwagon.

I don't think the burden of proof is on a fan who thinks Tamme has real TE skills to justify a national media outlet seeing what we see.
I think the burden is on those who think this is a surprise to demonstrate what proven outstanding TE was expected to be named, but was not. If there is no TE that stands out above Tamme, why would Tamme not be picked?

Caveman I think you are too critical on us. We all love Jacob and are proud to have him predicted that high. Its just odd b/c I don't think his production so far is All-SEC caliber, and usually you have to stand out at Kentucky to be all-sec. I took your request and decided to look at some of the other returning SEC tight ends. You are right, there isn't much production returning. One guy I would see ahead of Tamme in the eyes of the media is Martrez Milner for Georgia. He caught 14 passes for 291 yards giving him 20.8 yards per catch. He also had 2 touchdowns. This means he had more yards, more yards per catch, and more td's than Tamme. He did all of this with Leonard Pope being the primary tight end. He was picked by the Sporting News as their preseason 1st team all-sec.
With that being said, if Woodson or Pulley can get him the ball, I can see Tamme turning into another James Whalen. Maybe ESPN sees this as well.

Throw the ball to Tamme!

Sorry, if I have been too critical. I just assume that most fans are aware of Tamme's skills and would likewise assume that most would be pleasantly surprised that someone in the national media shared that awareness.

Hopefully, Tamme will get many opportunities. Young QBs can really benefit with a RB and TE that can catch short passes (See rookie Troy Aikman with TE Jay Novachek). Tamme could be that sort of TE for a Pulley, or even for Woodson.
