View Full Version : Pelphrey pulled a Pearl

Sort of. According to Matt Jones (who said, "according to Gary Parrish") John Pelphrey violated NCAA rules by having inappropriate contact with Archie Goodwin and another 2012 player. He goofed up by having his picture taken with the players, too. Dumb, like Pearl, for having his picture taken while in violation, but meeting with the players isn't actually that big a deal, if I'm not mistaken. Still, Arkansas is looking for a reason to dump Pelphrey, and this could be it.

Pelphrey is going to be out of a job this year, I'm afraid. Still, as long as he didn't do something stupid like lie about it, it won't be a big deal.

There's no doubt in my mind that Nolan is itching and lobbying to get his protege' Mike Anderson from Missouri in there as the coach of the Razorbacks.......
I actually thought about this a few weeks ago and my question is this,
If Pelphrey is let go by Arkansas, would Coach Cal entertain the idea of bringing John in as a assistant at Kentucky???
Would Pelphrey even consider that as a option????
For me, i would have no problem at all with that simply because i think John is a pretty good basketball mind who could obviously helped Billy the kid achieve his goal of winning two National Championships.......

Pelphrey is gone, IMO. Unless he does something crazy like get to the SEC tourney finals there is no way they are keeping him.
And, IMO, they shouldn't. He has done a pretty crap job on and off the court with his players. A total dissapointment.
I don't think Cal would bring Pelphrey in because all of his current assistants are better than him. Plus, Pelphrey would probably want to be a head coach somewhere not an assistant unless he had to be.

I think Pelphrey's gone no matter what. Even if he did have a great run in the SEC tourney, and then somehow in the NCAA as well, it would still only pacify the powers that be until he disappoints for the first time next season. Then, the whole "hot seat" discussion would start all over again. Point is, I think the higher-ups at Arkansas have already made up their minds.

What I was thinking. Not winning is one thing, but the off-court stuff is pretty damning if you're him.
Pelphrey was completely unprepared for a job at this level, IMO. He had done a decent job at South Alabama, but he wasn't prepared to deal with talent on this level, IMO.
I can't see him getting another head coaching job right away - I do think he has a future as a career assistant.

I don't think there is anything he can do to save his job outside of winning the SEC tourney and making a FF run. Neither is likely.
I'm not sure he's D1 HC material anyway. At least not at this point.

Pelphrey has no ties to Cal. Why should he bring him in? Just because a guy used to play for a school doesn't mean they need to coach there as well. Bringing in a new guy with no experience and grooming him from the start is a completely different situation, by the way. You don' t have to break bad habits.

I think there is a better chance of Pelphrey going to a team that is a part of Pitino-Donovan family tree than to Calipari.

I think its unfair to compare Pelphrey to Pearl in the sense that while apparently he did commit an infraction he didnt (to my knowledge) lie about it after the fact and attempt to deceive the NCAA. With Pearl there was intent to not only have the contact(s) but also to cover it up and lie about it. With Pelphrey, while he should have known better it appears that it was simply a matter of "my mom was like, 'Hey, go get a picture,'" Smith said. "So we snapped a picture." Big ethical discrepancy there between the two in my opinion and again unfair to Coach Pelphrey. Ill reserve my judgments and comparisons to a documented and proven liar until all is known.

Cal has several Ex players from the Pitino era on staff now. I don't think Pel would go for an assistants job now. Prolly go the D2 or mid major route.

He could probably get a HC job at the mid major level. He did a good job at South Alabama. I think they made the NCAA's twice while he was there. Most mid majors wouldn't consider him a liability at all.

True, Pelphrey has no ties to Cal. However, there is no doubt in my mind that Pelphrey was the hand that rocked the cradle in Florida's championship years. Up until this point, Flordia has been NIT bound ever since he left.
Im not sure he's a top notched head coach, but i do feel like he can help on the sidelines as a assistant coach even at Kentucky. He's been there, done that, and was a part of a Championship team as a assistant coach and could problay give pretty good advice from a players point of view as well.

IMO, Larry Shyatt had a big hand in making Florida as good as they were then. He was known as a defensive specialist and when he got there they got a whole lot better defensively and much, much tougher all around.

Pelphrey left Florida 4 years before they won a NCAA.

If JP loses the Arkansas job, I almost expect him to be back with Donovan at Florida.

I think business and employment would rank ahead of his personal rivalries.
I know if I were looking to get into coaching and was offered a spot at Louisville, I'd take it in a heartbeat. UK fan or not.

No, he wasn't. He left for South Alabama in 2002.

I don't see John taking an Assistant Coaching position. Makes more sense to go the mid-major route as a head coach.

Technically, no he wasn't part of a actual Championship trophy but he did help Donovan get to Florida's first ever National Championship game against Michigan State in the 1999-2000 season. I also believe that he had a big part of helping Donovan teach Ricky P's style of play down there in Florida.
Regardless, i still think John had a big part in helping Florida with it's program that eventually led to two National Championships down the road.
Anyways, it doesn't matter. If he finds himself out of a job and can't find another suitable home, perhaps tutoring from Cal at Kentucky could possibly help him down the road.......
