THERE IS PLENTY of blame to pass around in the saga of basketball recruit Chad Gray, who a week ago was denied admission to South Carolina.
None of that blame should fall at the feet of USC president Andrew Sorensen and his athletics director, Eric Hyman.
Blame them only if you do not cotton to their attempt to put the “student” back into student-athlete when it comes to the USC men’s basketball program.
Otherwise, blame a basketball program that posted a collective 1.95 grade-point average for the 2006 spring semester. Blame a 20-year-old prospect who apparently waited until his senior year of high school to concentrate on academics and — some might say — miraculously find success in the classroom. Finally, blame men’s basketball coach Dave Odom for his annual recruiting rummage through the junior-college ranks, where athletic ability generally far exceeds academic prowess.
