Excited, but cautious
Bud Mackey, a guard prospect from Scott County, remembers precisely when Kentucky offered him a scholarship. "The 27th of June," he said.
A junior next season, Mackey had completed a five-on-five scrimmage in UK's summer camp. He and the other campers were moving to another court to watch the college-age counselors play when UK Coach Tubby Smith approached and offered a scholarship.
One thought flooded Mackey's mind. "Wearing a UK uniform," he said. "I was very excited."
But not excited enough to commit.
"I'm going to wait for a while," he said. "I definitely need to wait."
'He's gone 180 degrees'
The wait on prospect Tyrone Nash should end this week. He's got offers from UK, Notre Dame, St. John's and Marquette. He's also considering going to prep school for a year.
One of the more sober-minded recruiting analysts, Tom Konchalski, noted the improvement shown by Nash, a 6-7 forward from Queens, N.Y.
"If you saw him 18 months ago, you'd think he was kind of soft," said Konchalski, who specializes in New York City and East Coast prospects. "He's gone 180 degrees. He's very aggressive."
Patterson's visits
Duke mentioned the weekend of Sept. 8-10 for an official recruiting visit by Patrick Patterson, the prospect's mother said.
As of the middle of last week, Tywanna Patterson said no date had been set for a Kentucky visit. The player intends to visit Duke, Florida, Wake Forest, UK and possibly a fifth school.
