UK passes on S.C. forward By Jerry Tipton
HERALD-LEADER STAFF WRITER
Kentucky is no longer recruiting prospect Chad Gray, university basketball spokesman Scott Stricklin said today.
Gray, a 6-foot-7 forward from Kingstree, S.C., became available after he could not gain enrollment at South Carolina. He told the newspaper in Columbia, The State, last week that University of Kentucky Coach Tubby Smith had offered a scholarship and he expected to make a recruiting visit to Kentucky.
Gray, rated No. 200 in the nation by the recruiting service Prep Stars, said he also hoped to visit Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech.
Gray's academic background became an issue when the NCAA did not give a stamp of approval on a prep school he attended. Later, the NCAA gave its approval, but South Carolina subsequently said it could not admit him into school.

Strange that it doesn't give any details as to why he is not longer wanted. Kinda makes ya wonder why he was such a big deal last week. Guess we'll have to make do wiht waht we have. Lord knows we could've used the depth.

I wonder if this means we might hear some good news about Tyrone Nash this week. While Tubby may have offered a scholly last week it may have been a conditional "whichever-one-takes-it-first" deal. They are similar players and I don't think we would take both even with a spot open. I have no inside knowledge, just speculating.

I think Nash would fit the need as well, and he is a lil stockier, and just as athletic. Let's hope for some good news, SOON.

i doubt it very seriously. i think that something happened as far as this kids background. we cooled off way to quickly, and i don't see nash coming here. like you, no inside info just my .02.

...and plus the vacancies down low are that much more enticing to the REAL studs at PF in the class of 07. If we took Grey...knowing he's not as good as Patterson et al., and add on his suspect grades, maybe we'd end up not getting some of those great forwards in 07....it's all probably for the best.
But then again....we'll never know...

"Between the lines" seems to indicate there's too much academic baggage attached to this guy. Hey - the SEC is said to have stood for "So Easy to Cheat" for so many years that we all know they went out and hired a commissioner to clean up the conference's proverbial act.
The dude is towing a tight line - the least bit of problem seems to indicate that schools should take a pass. This appears to be one of them.

The only reason he wasn't going to South Carolina was because the university president interceded and told Coach Odom he couldn't sign him. There is something questionable about Gray's academic record in high school. Apparently, Kentucky consulted the SEC office and finally decided not to sign Gray.

Thank goodness he is not coming to UK.
Asking for a problem IMO if we had continued to pursue him.

I heard that Gray is heading back to school somewhere in SC to get his grades back up and will re-enroll in December to USC.
