This has also been posted in the general forum so you may respond either place :)

WCN ELVES

It is always difficult to live through the holidays in the aftermath of an intense tragedy. For many hurricane victims this seasons holidays will be marked with pain and anguished memories. What, in the past, may have been a time for family gatherings and celebration will be a time for missing loved ones and a sense of great loss. Hurricane Katrina proved that natural disasters can happen to any of us at any time. By adopting a family for the holidays it gives us a chance to share our common humanity.

Judy (Capcat) and I have arranged to adopt a family for the holidays through the C.A.D.A. Adopt-a-family Program in Austin, TX where Judy lives. Over 600 families who evacuated from hurricane Katrina are still living in the Austin Area and awaiting help from FEMA

A Katrina evacuee family needs our help. Imagine how a parent must feel when they cannot give their child a holiday meal, a tree or even a gift. Our donations and commitment to sponsor a familycan help ease their burdens and give them a chance to enjoy the holidays.

C.A.D.A. created the "ADOPT-A-FAMILY" program, where they connect an Austin family directly to Katrina victims so that they can have personalized care in settling down into their new homes.

Community Action Development & Assistance (C.A.D.A.) is a local nonprofit organization and a division of The United Way. It has placed many Katrina Evacuee Families in definitive or semi-definitive housing in and around Austin, Texas. Although their primary need for housing has been resolved for the moment, these families still need a lot of help, from basic household items and clothing, to finding jobs and getting through the holidays

Judy’s family will be including the family in her family’s tradition by taking them to a nearby Christmas Tree Farm so they can choose a fresh Christmas tree and after will treat them to barbeque dinner… the meal will be donated by Judy’s husbands company.

We wanted to give members of WCN an opportunity to share in adoptingthis family. We have been given a choice of two families, one is a 3 member household with mom (42) and two children ages 12 and 14 and the other is a 6 member household with mom (34), grandma (72) and four children ages 17, 15, 13, and 10.

Please let us know ASAP if you are interested in being a part of this… either by a sending a PM or posting in this thread.....so we can plan on how much support from members we can expect in providing for their holiday needs….this will help us determine which size family to choose.
You can also help byadvertising or organizing helpwithin your work places or church groups

More information will be following soon as Judy meets with the family and gets their wish lists needs and requests…we will then post it along with their story, names and ages and give you a choice of options on how you can donate a gift…. either by picking an item off their list then buying, wrapping and sending directly to Judy or ordering an item online and have it shipped to Judy and she will wrap it for you. …or by sending a gift card to a selected store…..we do not want to handle any cash donations.

We look forward to hearing from you and welcome any questions, ideas or suggestions!!

The thanks should go to capcat and pyschocat for their hard work in putting this together. I can't wait to start shopping! Not having any kids of my own (just my nephews) this is fun thinking of special things to buy for them especially sincethey did not ask for much.

Something to help otherseither thinking of doing this or not sure. Just stop and think of ALL the things that make your everyday life easier or less stressful or just gives you a special relaxed this-is-my-safe-home kind of feeling and then think of ALL that being gone in an instant! Things that make your holidays or Sunday dinner special. These things cannot be replaced for them as we have no way of knowing what theirs was BUT we can all help( in small or big ways)in making this holiday season the beginning of many more special memories. Sometimes it is just a special snuggly blanket or pillow or putting that special ornament on the tree every yearor warm fuzzy slippers with a cup of hot chocolate while listening to Christmas carols orother music thatbrings a smile to our face and makes feel safe and happy.

Let's all show what a great bunch we have here in the Wildcat nation and help out in either big or smallways. Thanks everyone!

This wasposted this in the general forum, but it bears repeating, imo:

Psychocat is spending so much of her time helping this family find their way through the maze of FEMA, and getting records from offices and schoolsthat were destroyed in the flooding. This has meant HOURS of phone calls andthe refusal to takeno for an answer...she's alsohosted two receptions in her home this week for her husband's joband worked every day herself. This lady knows how to get things done.Thank you, Kristen.

I posted this in the general forum, but thought you might not see it and possiblywould be interested:

....sweet story about the 12 year old boy in this family. He is very interested in airplanes and the physics of flight. He did a report on that for school and apparently, he is one to do a real complete job on his work. Instead of the required one posterboard of information, he had to have three to present his :). Whenever we are out together, he is always pointing out things that are related to what he's learned in school.
