LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Jamil Paris batted down a pass, then got his hand on another.

He pressured the quarterback. He sped around the end and delivered a bone-crunching sack.

The University of Kentucky's third-string defensive end was everywhere yesterday in the Wildcats' first public scrimmage of the season at Commonwealth Stadium.

And his coaches were only mildly impressed by the true freshman.

"He's far from being ready to play," defensive coordinator Mike Archer said. "When you look at the other 50 plays he played, there were some screw-ups, because I saw them."

Still, Paris' performance underscored a point head coach Rich Brooks has been making all preseason -- that the Wildcats are deeper, faster and more talented than they've been in his previous three seasons at the helm.

"There was a time last year and two years ago (when) I'm not sure we had a lot of (third-team players) who could play," Brooks said. "And that's not true now."

It showed yesterday.
