Hey buddah, good to see you again.....

I've been to nearly every state, so this will be very difficult to decide with so many variables:

Best--Charleston, SC, Nashville, TN, Tallahassee, Fla.

Worst--Gary, Indiana

I know I'm leaving out many worthy places.

why so many people have such a bad experience with the french ? not you in particualar dave, i just seen this and was wondering. i was just there not a month ago... everyone was very nice, welcoming, and had alot of patience even my french was not good. oh w ell. probably alot of it has to do with pre concieved notions and some people just look for something to label how rude the french were.

Hmm...given my love affair with the lowcountry of south carolina, I'll give my favorites:

Best: Charleston, SC; Savannah, GA; and Beaufort, SC;

Honorable mention: Chicago, Il

Worst: Little Rock, Arkansas, Minneapolis, MN (the city wasn't bad, it was just colder than crap and the Marquette Fans that day were rude. So for this, I lump Minneapolis as a bad city).

Honorable Mention: Nashville, TN. Once again, the actual city isn't bad, I just hate driving through. Worst interstates ever.

My favorite US cities: NYC, San Francisco, Seattle.

Honorable mentions: Charleston (SC), Boston, DC--with all our problems, DC has much to offer.

Least favorite US cities: None.

Favorite small towns/cities: Burlington (VT), Lexington (I still think of Lex as a medium to small city, but I haven't been there in years.), Boulder, Berkeley, Sante Fe.

Favorite international cities: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Seoul (but I only spent a couple days there, but it left me wanting more), Mumbai (Bombay)--the whole gamut, from the ugly to the sublime. Some hate it, but I love it. Copenhagen--the cleanest city I've ever experienced.

Least favorite international city: Paris, but that's not really fair, as I've only been once--thirty-five years ago--and fled after one bad day of rude shopkeepers and clerks. It was the anti-Amsterdam and I was floored by the rudeness. But friends swear by it, so I need to go back for a second look.

Best Large City: Boston (lots of history, museums, parks, Boston Celtics/Bruins/Red Sox)
Best All-Around Town: Boulder, CO (shop, go ski, bike friendly roads, 300+ days of sunshine, etc.)
Best Small Town: Missoula, MT (a smart town, more Ph.D's working here as waiters than anywhere else, set perfectly in western MT among the Rockies)

Worse Large City: NYC (ppl are rude, hurried and nerves frayed, traffic)
Worse Small Town: Toss-up b/n Raywick, KY or Ward, CO (both known for unfriendly ppl)

WORSE: East St Louis (little Beirut), El Paso,

International....haven't been to many but the absolute best place is LONDON. The worse is Juarez followed by Geneva (stuck up and unfriendlyFrenchies).

With all due lack of respect for Pine Bluff - there is no worse place to live, visit or fly over than Charleston, WV.

Best city - DC.

I worked in Georgetown, SC, for seventeen years. Lovely town, when the winds are right. When the winds carry north, the stench from the paper mill can be daunting, to say the least. Sometimes you can smell the mill all the way up in Myrtle Beach.

But Front Street is a treasure and Kudzu Bakery has the best pecan pie I've ever tasted, which is huge praise, since I've made a career of searching for the perfect pie. I worked in the historical district, where there were houses from the 18th century that were still private homes and were in pristine condition.

I used to eat lunch at The River Room (on Front Street, facing Winyah Bay) one or two times a week. :thumbup Great fish sandwiches, soft-shell crabs, etc. Whenever I get back there, I make it a point to go there, then over to Kudzu to buy a pie or two.

Cinti. is having a bad go of it. I went to school here in the late 60's and early 70's then stayed on quite a while. In those days , it was a wonderful place. Now, everyone has moved but those who can't afford to, it seems. It is a shadow of it's former self.

There is still much culture and and delight. Views and good museums, the Playhouse and such. However, Northern Kentucky, Newport, Covington, Bellvue, etc. have outdone Cinti. in every conceivable way in the last few years. Still City Hall lags and fusses.

:cool:We passed them by decades ago by having the airport...this is just my opinion and nothing more...having worked in Cincinnati in the 60's and 70's I thought it was quite a racist town and way too conservative for my liking...however, I have fond memories of Cincinnati such as the downtown department stores, Coney Island and Crosley Field.

Problem is most people count northern Kentucky as Cincy. Even people from northern Kentucky often say they live in Cincy when asked if they are in far off other parts of the country. Anyway, I would not put Cincy on my worst list. I would put Memphis on there along with Detroit, Cleveland and Philly in the large city category. Charleston, W.Va., Gary, IN, and Wheeling, W.Va. make my worst smaller cities list. On my favorite big cities list, I'll put San Francisco, Chicago, and NYC. Favorite medium sized cities would be New Orleans (back when it still existed), Austin, and San Antonio. Favorite little cities include Savannah, Asheville, NC and Charleston, SC. Favorite college towns would be Madison, WI., Charlottesville, Va., Oxford, MS., Athens, GA., Lexington and Bloomington, IN. Worst would be Starkville, MS., which is perhaps in a league of its own. And my final category of best and worst places on "the other side of the river": best is northern Kentucky; worst is East St. Louis. Again, East St. Louis may be in a league of its own. I can't imagine (and wouldn't want to) that hell hole having any rivals in this category.

Pine Bluff, Arkansas is East St. Louis, except a lot more run down and with an overwhelming stench from local pulp mills thatpermeates every roomof every building in town. East St. Louis is a little piece of paradise compared to Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

My favorite cities that I have been to are Portland, Maine(but only in the summer), Phoenix-Scottsdale area, Flagler Beach, Florida, Lexington, Kentucky, and Charleston, South Carolina(beautiful old city with friendly people. Charleston is what I think of when they talk about southern charm. Charlestonhas the best of the New South and Old South rolled into one with a certain Italian Renaissance look about it.

Cities that I have been to but did not especially like: Erie, Pennsylvania, Cleveland, Ohio, Worchester, Massachusetts(although I loved Massachusetts overall), New Orleans, Louisiana. An old city with a lot of historical sites but a certain "pick pocket" way of life. I bet a person could meet more con artists in New Orleans in one daythan they could meet in most American cities in a year.

My Worst list: (Five)

Camden (The Most Dangerous City in The USA), New Jersey
Gary, Indiana
Detroit, Michigan
East St. Louis, Illinois
New Orleans, LA

New Orleans is a city without pride. It is filthy, obscene and corrupt. I've seen people urinating on the street while a police officer (I use the term loosely) looked on and didn't make a move. Drunks and druggies falling over each other. People throwing beer cans in the street, throwing garbage into the back alley and no one lifts a finger to stop it. If you get off of the beaten path you could die real quck. The mayor and the city deserve each other.

My Best List: (Five)

Tallahassee, Florida
Charleston, South Carolina
St. Augustine (America's Oldest City), Florida
Black Mountain, North Carolina
Tuscon, Arizona ( I like it hot)
