Indeed losing Careg Bonner was a big hit. Careg was a Scout Top 30 out of Huntsville, Alabama-RS Freshman. I think Careg wanted to play ( a lot) early and looked at the depth chart and just didn't see that happenning. He looked very good on the practice field.
He was behind Gary Barnidge 6'6 240 Jr, Scott Kuhn 6'5 255Jr (Chebron Conner HSKY).
In addition to Barnidge and Kuhn that leaves UL with true freshman Pete Nochta 6'5 240 (Lexington Tates Creek) whom the staff wanted to redshirt.
Breno Giacomini 6'7 300 Jr., was moved from the TE position to OT this year. Breno could still play the at the TE spot in special situations, goal line, short yardage, tackle eligible, but at 300 pounds he would certainly be the biggest TE in college football in recent memory.
UL was able to sneak out Zach Meagher (Cincinnati Glen Estes) 6'4 250 a Scout 4 star recruit, out of Ohio, that will greyshirt enrolling in January. That obviously played a major role Careg's decision as well, IMO.
On a related note, I was reading today in the Columbus Dispatch, where OSU will have 16 (!) 5th year players on thier roster this year. The "usual suspects" (OSU Michigan, SoCal etc) find a way to keep this kids around, major playing time or not. I guess major props are due but yet another indication of the Power Programs continued dominance. You just can't buy the leadership and other intangibles that 16 5th year players will bring to a team. Again, regardless if they are seeing playing time or not.
