LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky has closed its football practices to the media, but there's a former journalist who walks through the gates every day, unimpeded.
He's Jacob Tamme, today Kentucky's starting tight end but once upon a time the editor of the student newspaper at Boyle County High School.
"If I was (still a journalist), I could just show up and do some interviews at the end (of practice)," Tamme said. "But I wouldn't trade this."
No more than UK would trade its converted wide receiver, who, after a pair of off-season shoulder surgeries, is poised to be a key component of the Wildcats' offense.
With increased depth at tight end -- four players listed behind Tamme on the depth chart are redshirt freshmen -- Kentucky will have newfound options at the position.
But the Wildcats figure to turn most often to their most-known commodity.
"Jacob's the No. 1 guy," offensive coordinator Joker Phillips said. "So the first thing you have to ask when you ask 'How do you use the tight ends?' is 'How do you use Jacob?' "
The answer? You use Tamme to catch passes.
