View Full Version : I feel that once a QB starter has been decided........

Once the coaches decide on a QB to start against Louisville, I think it should be kept "hush-hush." Both of our QB's are so different that you can't just plan a general defense" that will work for both of them. I think it would be wise to keep it quiet until the game starts.
I know Brooks doesn't like a 2 QB system, but I'm not so sure it wouldn't be a good idea against UL. Their D would have to constantly make adjustments to suit whatever QB is in. I'm not an X's and O's person for football, but it would seem that would get a bit confusing trying to change your defnese several times per game.
Thoughts?

I believe that is what they are going to do and the QB competition is perfect in this regard. They won't announce the starter until a few days before the game maybe even not until game day.

As would the UK offense, that said, one of many problems encountered when a coach decides to platoon QB's. I do believe keeping UL guessing about who may start isa card the Cats should play. It does complicate the defensive preperation for the game.

While I understand what you're saying here, and it's a good point, we run pretty much the same offense for both QB's, so our offense wouldn't have to adjust as much. At least that's what I feel, anyway. It would be tougher for the UL defense to adjust to each QB than our offense, IMO.

The impression I've gotten is that the coaching staff is doing exactly what you said they should. I think they know right now who the starter is going to be, but they aren't giving it away.

I think we are in agreement with that. The offensive challenges would include the center to QB exchange (How many times have you seen a new QB enter the game and on the first snap..Fuuuumble), recognizing the cadence change, etc., the list goes on.

U of L is too good of a team for it to matter who the UK QB is...if it's Woodson, they will blitz and see if Woodson can take the hits; if it's Pulley, forget the blitz...they will double Burton and see if Pulley can throw to other receivers on short pass routes. Our biggest problem on offense is Burton is our only deep threat and he will be doubled all year. We simply can't stretch the field. We have the potential to be a good running team. If we can establish the run, Woodson will be more effective. We know Woodson is no threat to run, but he does throw a pretty pass. Pulley can run all day long because of his speed and the ability to take a vicious hit. My opinion is the coaches will go with the QB theplayers think has the football "heart" to lead them when the going gets tough. We really need a win against Louisville. They are on national TV at least 6 times this year, and as many as 8 times. UK apparently isn't on national TV after the U of L game. The U of L football program is way ahead of UK...it hurts to say that, but Smith and Petrino and Jurich have done a magnificent job of taking U of L to a level where UK hasn't been since the 1950s. The UK QB position is off the charts important this year...IMO, based on last year only, Pulley has the guts and will to win a UK QB has to have. Woodson has never showed the guts of a winner...I'm impressed w/ the leadership the coaches have said Woodson has displayed since last season. But do any of you know of someone who doesn't like to hit and get hit in football that has changed that part of himself ever? My memory doesn't bring up even one name.

If Burton is double teamed all year that does stretch the field alot.
Woodson didn't mind taking hits until his shoulder got messed up. As a matter of fact, he seemed to stick his head out too often. If you didn't notice that last year I am amazed. In the spring game, I think he felt the same way and was trying to avoid hits. They have QBs slide for a reason. In college football, it is necessary sometimes to 'stick your head out'. There is a very fine line. Woodson has spent the spring and summer finding that line it appears.
About the strategery and what not though you are right, uk7274.
The offense is the same, and both players can all plays in the playbook. What is different is how often certain plays are called. A 'speed option' from the shotgun will get called a lot more often with Pulley than Woodson, but Woodson would run it a few times vs. a bunch.
