I met this kid's family in Destin, Florida, a couple of years ago. Nice family. Seems like a real nice kid.

Hope he does well at Tech!!

this really suprises me how well he has done.. i still say that the other kid is still the guy to beat, but chris has been impressing the whole coaching staff... both qb's looked shaky throughout the early spring though. i remember watching a video from a little ways back, and Leach wasn't as pleased as he usually is. this is the first time since his tenure that they haven't had a fifth year senior pulling the strings. as the article outlines up until this season, MIke didn't have blue chippers, he had a walk on and the other kids had maybe one or two scholarship offers from mid major schools and still lead the ncaa in passing. should be interesting to see who sits in the saddle, good luck to chris indeed.

Can anyone recap UK's recruiting of or interest in Todd?

I'll be interested to see how Texas Tech does in the next couple of years, with a well regarded QB prospect finally running their offense. They may well win 10 games this season.

I think UK got serious about Todd only after losing its commitment of Bill Stull to then new Pittsburgh coach Wannstadt (and the former UK line coach who went to work for Pitt after Hudson resigned). UK then tried to get in with Todd and got some attention from Todd, but it was too late and he committed to Tech.

At least that is what I recall being reported at the time. I think this was one kid that Brooks and Co. dropped the ball on.

I think a major reason UK didn't really recruit Chris was because they didn't believe he was SEC-talent at that point. I watched him nearly every game at E-town, and I didn't think he was SEC-caliber. I didn't think he had the build or mobility (at that point). It seems that he's made MAJOR strides since getting to TT last year. I wish him all the luck in the world, because I know he's a good kid and an excellent football player.

Kentucky has recently produced some good quarterbacks who have gone on topretty good careerselsewhere. Gino Guidugli had a fantastic career at Cincinnati, as didDeontey Kenner who preceded him at Cincinnati.Dustin Grutza now appears firmly ensconced as the starter there, and Chris Toddmay be the starter at Texas Tech whileBlake Powers starts at QB for Indiana.

Guidugli committed to Mumme but like many other great prospects changed course after the recruiting scandal broke; Grutza supposedly wanted to come to UK but UK was not interested (and he is facing a different caliber of opposition there than he would at UK). I don't think UK was that interested in Powers and I have no recollectionof whether UK recruited Kenner as a QB or otherwise. I don't know how any of them would've fared at UK though Guidugli would've been intriguing as a Wildcat in those years,Kenner would've been a strikingly differentoption for the 1999 season when Bonner succeeded Couchor in2000 when Bonner and Lorenzen duked it out,and it's interesting to think about Grutza, Todd or Powers competing with Woodson and Pulley right now.

In terms of 'ones who got away' I don't know that I'd rank these guys as high as several other Kentuckians who chose to play college football elsewhere in the past several years, especially the linemen that went to Ohio State and Indiana and some defensive players that found their way to Tennessee and elsewhere but it's always interesting to think about what some of those guysmight have done in blue and white and worth noting that the D-I players produced in the state included some starting QBs.

Buddah, if Leach comes to UK (;)), do you think he would ask Todd to come home?
