It may have been a year and a half ago.. Does anyone remember this ? By chance did anyone tape this or know of anyone who taped it ? If so, could you make me a copy of it, i would pay you.. I can't find it for sale anywhere.

When you say "documentary," that intones a feature length film.

I didn't know it was turned into a film. I remember Schapp doing a piece on SportsCenter that ran about 10 minutes. (A very fine piece.) But it was a movie?

Edit: There was a movie made in the early '90s called Searching for Bobby Fischer, but that was based on a book by Fred Waitzkin and it isn't a documentary.

Oh yeah, I remember that one on Bobby Fischer. Isn't that the one where he rips into Jeremy Schaap when they are discussing his relationship with Dick Shaap? I guess you've already searched the internet for this piece, right? I'm not sure if ESPN has it archived, but I seem to remember reading a transcript one time of their exchange. I did a search on google for Bobby and his cognitive abilities and that story came up in one of the hits.

I hope you can find something.

i have seen searching for bobby fischer. this piece was something that was longer than ten minutes, if i recall correctly. A doctumentary is different than a feature length film which is usually a fictional piece. what i am talking about are like the beyond the glory specials, i have read articles where they refer to them as documentary or documentary specials about a specific person.. this was something jermey schapp did, they showed snippets of it on sports center, but it was a special unto itself, called "finding bobby fischer". i could have swore that the schapp piece was longer than ten minutes, unless they have included this piece with a longer documentary about fischer, because in the thing i watched, it included a retrospective about his carrear, and interviews with spassky etc.

Actually, now that you mention it I believe the piece originally ran on an ABC network show. Could have been 20/20, or maybe Nightline.

possible. seems like it aired on ESPN though. though now that i think about it Nightline is a strong possibilty.

I actually found a link (http://www.constitutioncenter.org/PressRoom/PressReleases/2006_05_15_16264.shtml). It was called Finding Bobby Fischer.

This article calls it a "SportsCenter feature," so I guess I was wrong about it originally appearing on an ABC show.

It was one of the best things I've ever seen on ESPN.

yep as i thought and remarked, it was called finding bobby fischer and it was a feature length documentary on his carrear on ESPN.. it followed the same format as nightline or even front line with schapp narrating.. it was a good show but for the life of me, i can't find it onsale anywhere. the ending was schapp confronting fischer in iceland and fischer made some anti semtic remarks about schapp's father and his jewish hertiage, kind of ironic since fischer himself is jewish. topcats(c) did you tape it ? will, thank you for researching that. it was one of those things that they played one time and never played again, cause i remember thinking, they will re air this, so i can tape it then, and they never did. VERY strange for ESPN..

If I remember correctly, Fischer was bitter about the elder Schaap once commenting that Bobby didn't have a sane bone in his body. He said that Dick had befriended him as a child then slandered him "like a typical Jewish snake."

i disagree with his choice of words, but it was rather two face what schaap said... bobby is just highly eccentric. he is reported to have an iq of 180, so some personality quirks are to be expected, i would think. i do think the whole investigation and arrest of fischer was very suspect to begin with. he played chess when an embargo was in effect, but the united states and other countries funneled weapons into bosina.. just alot of things, but that is for another discussion in another forum probably.

i was hoping you had this taped though grub... strange you can't find this anywhere.

It originally aired on Outside the Lines on ESPN...I believe on Sunday morning. Like you I wish I had taped it. I lost a lot of respect for Jeremy Schaap after that. It seemed to me that Schaap intentionally went there to antagonize Fischer to get his story. I think you and I discussed this very same topic at WCF right after it aired back inMarch/April 2005.

BTW, there are several vintage Bobby Fischer interviews on YouTube - Here's one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnAQN_iwNoA

yes we did, I said fischer was the greatest to ever come out of america and even the world. you told me that kasprov was better and i disagreed and we were off. ;)

i have all of fischer's youtube stuff saved to my desk top. with everything and everybody selling their grandma on DVD, you would think ESPN would come out with outside the lines on DVD. i never really had much respect for schaap.. like you said, he does stuff intentionally with the intent to antagonize and then goes crying to others. i remember when bobby knight told him he would never be as good as dad, jermey went crying to his daddy. who then made a public demand for an apology... just cowardly... if your going to be a worm, take the consequences... someone like greg doyle isn't as subtle as schaap, but i lump both of them in the same pile.. schapp just does stuff and then says , why me ? though this special was great and he deserved the award.. he just doesn't deserve my respect.. just my own opinion.

that is true i guess, but dick schapp befriended bobby when he was i think 12 or 13 years old. i read an autobiography about fischer, he was a big loner and even had some learning disablities in school.. so for schapp to crush him and joke to his journalist friends, that bobby was insane, that would crush someone with Bobby's type of disposition. this type of thing would already add to a negative self image fischer probably had. this also probably added to the oppositional defiant adult he is now.
from what i read, bobby had a good support system with his mother and sister, but no doubt this hurt him deeply. reminds me of a guy i knew in elementary and junior high school, parents were very supportative, but he had someone call him a dysfunctional misfit. well that guy will probably going for his PHD within a few years.. reading that about schapp made me remember that guy very clearly. people don't realize the effect a few derogatory comments can have on a kid, even if the kid has a good support system can be scared by a few idiot comments from adult figures.

after reading that about schapp i didn't respect him at that moment, nor do i respect his weasal son. i don't think being a slime ball is reserved for any race or ethnicity though.... bobby is a tragic figure to be sure, which is probably why there is such a myth built around him.

No, but it was based on actual events. The characters names are the same as the real people. Josh Waitzkin was great but never lived up the level that Fischer played.

I thought the interview with Fischer and Schapp was several years old..

I'll see if I can scrape up the video.

Fischer was a very paranoid individual. A chess genius, but could not integrate into society very well. When his head was on straight, he was the best.

You know, I was still thinking about the interview with Dick, not his son Jeremy which did take place last year. All my chess stuff is back in Atlanta.

if you have it, I WOULD REALLY REALLY appericate a copy, i would pay you for your trouble, would it anyways.. when you go through your chess stuff, if that occurs in the next six months to a year.
