It's official: Kentucky high school football will expand from four to six classes for the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association's Board of Control yesterday gave final approval to the realignment, which will boost the number of teams in the playoffs from 128 to 192.
"I've heard a lot of people say that cheapens the playoffs, but football's the only sport that doesn't have everybody in the playoffs," said board member and Newport Central Catholic Coach Bob Schneider, who chaired the KHSAA's football committee.

[line]I hate to see this happen. it does cheapen the playoffs, and every 1-9/0-10 team in the state will make the playoffs. It makes district regular season games meaningless and the playoffs a joke
With this new alignment, perennial powers Danville and Bardstown find themselves in the same Class 2A district.
Luckily, crosstown rivals St. X and Trinity would never have to meet until the state championship. Funny how that always happens.

I dislike this move as well. Essentially, half of every district will be eligible for the playoffs.

Ditto... I think this is an uneccessary move by the KHSAA. And it's silly that this all stemmed from Trinity, St. X, and Male dominating...

I read a comment on another board about Kentucky should go to a system like S. Carolina. In doing this KY would keep its current system and move only it's biggest 16 schools to what the call the Super 16 level.

I like that. The only change I would make to that plan is to also put ALL private schools in that "Super" division.
I haven't made up my mind how I feel about the new class structure yet. I don't think it cheapens the playoffs much more than they already are...in the district our team is in (I help coach a bit), 4/6 teams make the playoffs. In the new alignment, 4/5 will make it.

It really doesn't matter I guess, the same teams will still dominate in the new alignment.
1A - Beechwood, Mayfield
2A - Danville, Newport Cath
4A - Lexington Cath
5A - Highlands, Cov Cath
6A - Trinity, St X, Male
Only the 3A division is lacking of a traditional "Power House" and is wide open.
By spreading out the power house teams it just makes it easier for them, for example Lexington Catholic no longer has to worry about a Highlands, Covington Catholic or a Bowling Green. This alignment will only make people scream louder for a Private/Public split.

Paducah Tighlman & Belfry could be considered powerhouses in 3A. Not much outside that, though.
LexCath's biggest obstacle may be Boyle Co...and they are in the same district.
