I think this would be a great subject to talk about. I'm curious to know how many of these verbal committment actually do sign on the dotted line with the team they actually verbal too? I mean, if the signing period isn't until February, why are players verbally now? Do they stop their recruiting process after verbally committing to a team or what? It just seems like a lot can happen between now and February. Are these verbal committments a contract that they can't get out of? I'm not understanding all the rush and tv coverage I'm seeing on FSN about this?

Verbals are just that. Many do not sign and do not qualify. Many schools still recruit kids that have verballed to other schools. It is not a contract of any sort. The madness is because the signing period is too late. It is a major beef I have with it. They say they don't let kids sign because they want them to concentrate on school. They can't concentrate on school with fat fill in their face all fall though.

Actually, the vast majority of HS prospects verbal to one school and one school only and then honor their commitment by signing the LOI on signing day. There are exceptions, however. Charles Grant, the great DE at UGA now with the Saints, verballed to about six different schools.

IIRC, the only one who didn't sign with us, after commiting, last year was the QB from PA (Stull?). He went to Pitt instead.

jb, those that don't qualify can sign. They just can't get a scholarship or in school.
Earl Bennett (Vandy) was another decommit. We normally have 2 or 3 we lose and 2 or 3 we gain in the last few days.

That is about how many I would say that actually don't honor their verbal. Most will sign barring a major change or situation evolving within the football program (ie NCAA investigation, Coaching staff changes, etc.).

I think the year before last, we also lost two. Mason, who ran with Dixon, and the QB from tn that went to SC. but then we had three or four show up on signing day, that no one even knew we were recruiting. The coaches know who is coming and who's not.

Antonio Heffner? I could be wrong, but I don't think he ever gave a commitment. I think he just narrowed his decision down to UK or USC and picked USC. UK got Joe Joe Brown about a day or two after that.
