On heels of this mornings horrific news from Lexington, my question is, have there been other crashes in this state where there was a huge loss of life? Just curious.

Well, I heard them say this is the largest loss of life from a plane crash in the continental U.S. in 60 years so I'd guess no but not sure.

That seems so unusual to me that 49 people would be the largest in 60 years.

How many died when the Marshall Football team crashed?

Largest in KY was in the late 60's in Northern KY.

Largest worldwide would be the two jumbos collliding in the fog in the Pacific when an impatient and insane Air France captain ordered the takeoff roll started in the fog even though another plane was still on the runway.

I believe they said in the last 6 years. Edit: UK78Alum answered the Kentucky question. I believe this one was the biggest loss of life since 9/11 in the US.

This is the only jetliner crash that I know of in Kentucky. I know that there have been several small, private plane crashes, but this is the only jetliner that I know of.

Four years ago a small private plane crashed at Bluegrass Airport and slid out onto Versailles road. I think there were eigh people on board, but only one or two died. Not sure about that, though. Oddly enough, I think it happened on the same weekend as this crash (weekend before Labor Day).

Weird.

Correct. 60 years would cover such crashes as the mid air over Brooklyn, the famous mid air over the Grand Canyon, etc.

More recently, the rudder control pumps on 737's caused at least two fatal crashes, so obviously it can't be 60 years.

As Spanish Moss said........

It was the worst US airline accident since an American Airlines flight in New York killed 265 people two months after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The 2001 crash in New York killed 260 people on board and five others on the ground. An investigation blamed the vertical stabilizer and rudder.

I was in New Orleans when this happened about to board a plane home. They originally thought it was another terrorist attack and security was tightened even further. They went through all my carry on things with a fine tooth comb.I had no idea what was going on until landing in Nashville.

What about the plane that crashed into the everglades a few years ago.
