Kentucky @ Mississippi Officials Report.

Rating: 3 votes, 4.67 average.
1. Joe Lindsay. 2. Michael Roberts. 3. Jim Burr.

Missed walks, 5. Palms, to many to count!

First let me preface my comments by stating, this was a most difficult game to call because there was no flow to it. But, this crew had a hand in that issue. This was the most inconsistently called game I've seen in awhile. Here's my take on why. Mr Lindsay, consistently called every touch foul he could find when the play was in his primary. Mr Burr, consistently allowed unbelievable contact, (especially in paint area) when play was in his area. Mr Roberts was simply inconsistent everywhere. Mr Burr continues to have position issues due to a problem getting up the court, and leaning in was observed. I have not seen a player, #32 white, constantly palm the basketball and it not be called, before this game. Late in the game, frustration was demonstrated and not addressed, which could have moved into a bad situation. Please note, I'm not mentioning floor coverage and other issues I normally do, because in this game, it really was a non-issue. I have several issues, but will only mention a few.

Lindsay; Ball in your primary, you called an off-ball touch foul on #22 blue. Mr Roberts had off-ball coverage @ lead position and had no call.
Burr; Good call, foul on #23 white.
Roberts; #33 blue on the back of #23 white. No call?
Burr; #33 blue walked before touch foul you called on #31 white.
Crew; #32 white palms the ball nearly every dribble. Ignored?
Lindsay; #3 white and #22 white hand checking before #12 blue committed push off offensive foul.
Lindsay; You indicated Block on #23 white against #22 blue. Was not visable to me.
Roberts; Good off-ball foul called on #31 white.
Burr; #10 blue palmed the ball during drive. Not called?
Lindsey; #10 blue slapped #12 white in face. No call?
Burr; Illegal block out by #31 white. Both arms extended behind, holding offensive player.
Roberts; #10 white from behind, grabs #22's arms with no play on ball. Intentional? I thought so.
Roberts; I don't disagree with off-ball foul called on #34 blue. But hand check by #22 white was ignored.
Burr; Had to be either a foul on #12 blue or on #22 blue, or a walk, or out of bounds when #10 white's arm was out. You called nothing and you were in correct position to see the entire play. This has to be the most grossly missed call I've ever seen as an official or an evaluator!
Lindsay; #32 white continues to palm the ball, 5 times during his dribble right in front of you.
Burr; #3 blue on inside spot for free-throw. Pushed by #23 white going for rebound. #23 white then pushes #3 blue to the floor with nothing called. You then, correctly called #22 blue for an on the back foul. ???

Weird things happened in this game. Mr Lindsay and Mr Roberts are moving into the prime times in their respective careers, while Mr Burr is closing in on the end of his. I'm sure when each of you review the film, you will see things you ignored. Because of the way this game was handled, I really can't come up with a fair grade, so this game I'll pass.

Thanks, Lighthouse. I haven't watched the game yet, so this helps really clue me in on how the action took place

I'm sure this was a hard one! I made the comment myself, about no flow, the first half is hard to watch!
Thanks for the assessment! I would rate them an A, for AWFUL!

Lighthouse, what was your take on the ball being left in the back court and player being made to retrieve it and then hands it to ref who made him go get it?

I think it was a great move. I've done the same thing in games. It sends a message to all players that shanagans like that will not be tolerated. It also is covered by rule. A player can be assessed a techenical foul for delay of game, and I would bet that's what the official told the player.

Over the years Jim Burr has been one of my favorite officials. He has always handled difficult situations forcefully and with a nice sense of humor and always seemed to communicate well with players and coaches. Obviously Jim is now past his prime and he would be well advised to consider retiring before he loses the respect he has built throughout his career.

After talking with a referee friend, and him explaining what happened after the kid laid the ball down, I went back and watched that part of the game again. I had missed the replay showing Mr Lindsay running up to Mr Burr and telling him to not get the ball but make #22 go get it. While I agree with the intention Mr Lindsay had, I firmly disagree with the way he handled it. I would never go to an officiall anywhere and embarrass him like that. That might explain Mr Burr's loss of concentration, although with his experience, it shouldn't.

    Lighthouse,
It seems that the 'palming' violation has gone away in the eyes of the officials.
Is it possible in your expert opinion, that they don't really enforce that much??

That's for sure and it's a shame. Kids used to learn how to dribble because their youth, middle school, and high school coaches taught them how. Like the walking rule, the palming rule hasn't changed and if officials would inforce those rules, the coaches would teach it again and the game would be better for it.

I didn't see the game, but listened to it on the radio. My son called, 10 minutes into the the game, in a towering rath over the officiating, but that's not unusual so I blew it off. It appears he was right this time!
