  1. Lexington Herald-Leader

I don't know how many of you read the H-L online, I know many of you don't read it at all. I went online this morning to read it, while eating breakfast, as I have done for years. It seems it's no longer free. The first month is $0.99, then it's $9.99 a month or $119.88 for a year.

It's actually free if you have a hardcopy subscription. Just give them that information and they will unlock your online access.

  4. If there's an article or news story that interests you, just google the heading and read it that way. This is how I read the NYT. Even our local rag--and it is pretty much a poor excuse for a paper--has started charging on line. Get used to it--hard copy newspapers are becoming more and more obsolete and this is how they hope to survive. The WaPo is still free online, but look for that to change soon.

    I don't have a hardcopy subscription.

Thanks for the tip. I mostly like to read Jennifer Smith's fb articles. That's what I would have missed the most.

A lot of newspapers are doing this. This is their last gasp effort to remain alive. Newspapers are dying away fast. They didn't keep up with the times and now are trying to make people pay for their mistakes. I know I won't ever be paying for online news when I can get it elsewhere for free.

I'm not really sure what "mistakes" print newspapers are making - they just can't keep up with the "instant" aspect of the internet, something beyond their control.
Print newspapers are always at least one day behind, and who wants to pay for that?
"Conservatism, I fear (so to speak), can never be cleansed of this need to instill fear. Whether it’s of black people or of street thugs or of immigrants or of terrorists or of jackbooted government agents, it’s how the conservative mind works. I don’t even think it’s always cynical and manipulative; conservatives often do see enemies under every bed. But that doesn’t mean they’re there, and it most definitely doesn’t mean the rest of us ought to make law and policy based on their nightmares."

You make a good point...but I still enjoy the feel of a newspaper in my hand, newsprint smudges and all. Maybe it's the old paper boy in me. Our local paper isn't work the paper it's printed on, but I used to love reading the morning WaPo...and still enjoy the occasional NYT Sunday paper.

  11. I don't usually read enough online news to encounter a pay wall, as most give you 20 free articles or so a month. But on the rare occasion that I have encountered it, all you have to do is go into your browser settings and clear out your cookies. Either that or open up a browser into private mode (porn mode) and you should be good to go.

Very odd because I paid this like 3 years ago to read it online.

It may be similar to what the Courier went to.

It was/is available on line for free, but the content is limited.

Until this week, the entire article was available at no cost. Now when you click on a heading it takes you into the article, and in a few seconds, a window appears listing the payment options. The article is shown in the background, but it's very dim and is partially obscured by the window.

  15. In some ways it is odd I mean a newspaper is essentially an advertisement platform. When I go to the Lexington Herald website the advertisements are present and they have my eyeballs without paper production and delivery costs.

  16. FWIW, I was checking out their articles to see if I could them on another site, and things are back to normal, at least for the time being.
