    Former Cat pro news

    from cbssports.com

Tim Masthay has been released by the Colts...the team needed to pick up a QB to replace injured Jim Sorgy and Tim was odd man out.

Andre Woodson is just about dead even with the Giants fifth round draft pick. There are rumors, however, that the Giants wish to keep both QBs...
David Carr is a FA after this year and has announced he wishes to be traded to a team where he could start.

Steve Johnson still nursing a rib cartilage injury....apparently will be a race to who gets healthy first as somewhere between WR #3 and #5...Bruce Hardy still rehabbing from a bad ACL.

Myron Pryor is about 5th on the nose tackle list for the Pats.

Now the work starts for all.

I'll also add that Laurent Robinson has supplanted Keenan Burton as the #2 WR in St Louis.

However, #1 WR Donnie avery has a foot isue that will keep him out 4-6 weeks. Here's hoping Keenan can make a splash those first few games.

I appreciate all the information; it is nice to know what is happening with our football alums.
I don't understand the inclusion regarding David Carr though.
    Have I missed something?

sorry, I needed to clean that up. David C is the #2 QB for the Giants, without the coaches questioning that. He wants to leave after this year or be the starter...he won't be the starter in New York unless Eli is injured.
That means the QB picked as the third string QB is heir apparent to
the backup for Manning. So it is possible the Giants want to keep both
QBs fighting for the third string role this year.

Thanks for the info about our former Cats, billoliver40. I surely hated to read about Tim Masthay's release, though. According to Tim himself at the time, even though the Colts had drafted a kicker, he had chosen to go there because of his personal preference and their proximity to home. I will be surprised if another team does not pick him up, though, particularly with his outstanding "hang" time.

In regard to Stevie, that was such "bum" luck. Here's hoping he heals quickly. Also, naturally, I hope Keenan makes more of those outstanding catches in training camp practices -- ones we know he can make. In regard to Andre, yes, Carr's wishes could enter into increasing Andre's chances of sticking with the Giants. In regard to Myron, here's hoping that he moves up that chart.

As I posted on another thread, Jeremy Jarmon has been impressing the Redskins, according to accounts shared on WLAP. He has not only impressed on special teams, but also at the defensive end position. It's really sounding good on that one. As always, GOOD LUCK to all the former Cats.

absolutely, poodoo...Jeremy J has been impressing the Redskins coaching staff greatly. He may not start this year, but a year backing up and getting even stronger can only help. He looks like the steal of the draft so far.

I believe Tim Masthay may end up much the same as Mr. Pakulak...and have to bide his time until a position comes open for him. He definitely has the talent to do the job.

For all else, it's much a numbers game and dollars game. (Artose Pinner was undoubtedly the most efficient back in preseason for Detroit last year, but his years in the league made his salary vs production too high).
Throw in a few injuries and luck, and remember what all former NFL players say....that NFL means Not For Long.
Good luck and good fortune to all the guys that have worn UK Blue. Thanks, guys....

Tim Masthay is a great talent at punter with some other skills to boot.
I hope he makes it and lasts longer than Larry Seiple and Ray Guy combined.
But you've got to remember, there are only 32 punting jobs out there.

By the way, is there any info on Johnny Williams (Jaguars) or Braxton and Wesley (Broncos)?

Also, my older son visited the Colts' training camp and shared with me that Jacob Tamme has made some really nice catches in camp, not at all surprising to us Kentucky fans. Actually, the day he had watched camp, Tim was still there and had stood out in the area of "hang" time, but the drafted guy had booted a punt for 68 yards.

Further, I watched all of the Titans' preseason game to see Rafael Little. He got into the game on special teams (and had a clipping penalty, unfortunately) and FINALLY got a few plays at running back at the very end, one of which was a nice little run. The number of running backs the Titans played was unreal, though. Just from watching that, I did not get a good feeling.

As always, GOOD LUCK to all of our former Wildcats.

Well, poodoo....just offering some of my opinions....and that a a couple of dollars will get you a cup of coffee....if you don't go to Starbuck's

Johnny Williams is on a team with some fine linebackers and a hard line coach. He is currently listed third at his slot....which isn't too bad if he has a good training camp.

Wesley W has a nagging knee injury. I'm a bit worried about that (not as much as he would be) since speed is one of his fortes.
Braxton made the news by tackling a running back by the back of his jersey and the rb had to be helped off the field. Not the best way to impress.

Not much news on Garry Williams. Glenn Holt seems to have at least a temporary home. Otis Grigsby was resigned by the Vikings as a backup befor the preseason, I believe. Glenn Pakulak getting almost more competition than he can stand for the NO punter job.

Rafael seems to be on Coach Fischer's good guy list. But in a business, that could be short lived. I think he is primarily being looked at as a kick/
punt returner....and possibly a change of pace back. I hope he makes it.

  12. Just checked on cbssportsline and myron pryor is 4th at defensive tackle. The Patriots run a 3-4 also.

Again, I so appreciate your FREE information, billoliver40.

I really hate to read about Wesley's "nagging injury." I'm rather pleased to read that Johnny Williams is running third at his position right now, though, as that's not bad. In regard to Garry Williams, I had been wondering about him from the time of the draft.

About Rafael, I would sometimes see him near his head coach on the sideline last season, actually. It is indeed a business, though. Also, in regard to his returning kicks, I was disappointed that he had not returned a kick in the televised game (unless the announcers didn't name the returner and I missed it).

I surely wish all our former Wildcats the best, and I know you do, too.

I just watched an NFL Network replay of the Redskins/Ravens game. Jeremy got quite a few snaps, although not ones early in the game. Unfortunately, he did not make a tackle and get recognized as a former University of Kentucky player this particular game, but I still enjoyed watching it. I had thought I had recognized him by his movements as the defensive end on the left side, though, and then I finally saw his name. He's number 76 -- if someone watches the Redskins again.

I heard from a son that Myron Pryor recorded a sack last night. I'm planning on watching the Rams' Keenan Burton in a few minutes on the NFL Network -- and then hopefully watching the Broncos' Wesley Woodyard and Braxton Kelley. The Colts and Jacob Tamme will be on at midnight our time, so I'll be taping that one to watch later.

Anyway, I thought you who have the NFL Network might be interested.

Macduff & NFL: Redskins' rookie Jarmon a big act

    Posted: Aug 16, 2009 7:34 PM EDT Updated: Aug 16, 2009 9:08 PM EDT

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - From Macduff to the NFL?
Washington Redskins rookie Jeremy Jarmon is one of those rare athletes who dabbled in drama at college. He even took part in the University of Kentucky's spring game on the same day he appeared on stage at the campus theater.
Jarmon had planned to pursue a second degree in theater at UK, but he tested positive for a banned substance and lost his final year of eligibility. He was selected by the Redskins in July's supplemental draft.
Now he's one of the surprises of training camp. Defensive coordinator Greg Blache says Jarmon could be regular contributor "a little sooner than we thought."
Jarmon says theater and football are similar - he gets nervous before a show and before a game, but the nerves are gone once the action begins.

Jarmon, Woodson impress at training camps

Redskins rookie defensive lineman Jeremy Jarmon has been perhaps the most pleasant surprise for the team in training camp, giving Washington yet another dynamic weapon on an already loaded defensive line.

"He is actually a little bit further along right now than I thought he would be," defensive coordinator Greg Blache said. "Honestly, some of the things that he can do athletically help bring him up. When his mind catches up with his athletic skills, I think he will possibly be on the field even a little sooner than we thought."

Jarmon, who lost his NCAA eligibility at Kentucky earlier this year after testing positive for a banned substance, didn't get a chance to take part in spring minicamp or other off-season practices.

He said he made up for it by studying the play book and videos of Redskins practices. Usually a rookie's head is swimming on Day 1 of camp, but Jarmon said: "It seemed to come natural."

Woodson trying to rebound from shaky '08 pre-season

Andre Woodson entered the New York Giants' pre-season finale last season with 9:20 remaining.

On his second play, the former Kentucky quarterback mishandled the snap and the Giants lost four yards. Moments later, he dropped a shotgun snap on third down and they moved back another 10 yards.

  18. I stayed up to watch Andre play in the second half of the Monday night game last night. He didn't look very good. Threw an interception and a couple of completions. Also, it's hard to play with the third string and expect much, but you've got to do it.

This morning's New York Daily News said he was "ineffective."
Just a big fan of UK Football.

I watched as well and Woodson played poorly, IMHO. The interception and his sack were simply bad decisions. The kind of bad decisions that can get you cut when you're trying to make a roster as the 3rd QB.
Woodson does look slimmer than his UK days and he still throws a beautiful deep ball. I wish him all the luck in the world.

Thanks to ukcats1 for the info on Jarmon. It continues to sound very good for him. I surely hate to read about Andre's performance, though (and we taped the game, but have not yet watched it).
