Patterson DDO?

I am growing concerned about Patterson in this offense. Yes I know he hit a couple of 3's but against this level of competition he should be dominant. Frankly in both games AND the Blue & White scrimmage he has been invisible for significant stretches of the game. He seems uncomfortable and tentative on the offensive end. I hope it improves as the season progresses.

I have concerns about this as well in which i talked about the other day.In the first half of the game tonight, i was sitting there thinking to myself that with Patterson playing out front, it's going to take away perhaps some of his rebouding and scoring. However, in the second half, i noticed the playcalling was somewhat different and Patterson and Cousins both were playing around the basket more while they where both in the game.

Furthermore, on the way home listening to the Big Blue Network and listening to Coach Calipari talk about the offense and his big men, im very confident that he will utilizie both Patrick and Cousins in the middle as well as Orton depending on the game and the situations. He basically made the comment that the bigs could play down low out of a modified dribble drive and that he will do whatever it takes to win and get the job done. Hearing that let's me know that Calipari is on top of the situation and well aware of what needs to be done.

On another note, after the game and in Patrick's interview, he admitted that the dribble drive is still very new and somewhat tough to learn. He's still adapting to the new offense and feeling his way through......

Well, he had 25 in the B/W game. If that's invisible, then he'll be Moses Malone when the season starts.

Got it going in the second half tonight. More than the threes, he started to move with the flow of the offense; he started to actually do the dribble-drive the way it's supposed to be run.

I maintain that it's Patrick Patterson and he'll be fine, but one thing I notice about him is that he seems a little shaky. I chalk that up to maybe playing out of position, but he seems to be muffing a lot of passes, dribbling in funky ways, just generally losing the ball a lot. Could be just trying to press. He's a first team all-America, it's his last shot, he's the captain of the team--that's a lot of pressure.

This stuff will get worked out here in the next few weeks, IMO.

Without a doubt and im not worried about it in the least bit.In fact, at one point in the game, i was actually sitting there thinking to myself would Coach Calipari actually change his style and system if he had to to make it work?????

Then i listen to him on the radio on the way home and he basically says the he will do what he has to do regardless to get a win if it means playing the big's and having scores in the 60's.In fact he said he didn't have this many big men when he coached in New Jersey.......

Coach Cal is a pro and will modify when needed......................

If there's anybody willing to adapt, it's Calipari.

The man changed his entire system of play after nearly two decades in the business. Listening to him in the coaches clinic the other week, he talks almost constantly about tweaking the offense to fit his personnel.

This guy's cut from a different cloth than the last guy.

Patterson will be fine. I do wonder why Patterson doesn't play the '5' in the offense and Cousins move to the 4. Cousins seems more comfortable creating off the dribble than Patterson, but he anchors himself down on that block playing the 5--- where we all know Patterson excels.

Three things to consider:

1) These are just exhibition games. Conclusions drawn from the way anyone played are largely meaningless.

2) Patterson was playing against much smaller players in both exhibitions, an obvious mismatch for a big guy trying to take a smaller, quicker opponent off the dribble...especially when he's not accustomed to doing it. Patterson will get better and the opponents will get bigger. Patrick is the last one anyone needs to worry about on this team. He'll be fine.

3) This is a new system for everyone and it is going to take time before everyone feels comfortable. This is probably even more true for big guys who are used to posting up 90% of the time. But this is a talented team and they will eventually catch on to it. When they do, look out....

If there were any concern about PPat in the DDO- to me it would be that he NEVER uses his left hand off the dribble. Makes him easy to guard off the bounce.

Yeah Patterson will be okay, im just glad all the freshmen have gotten alot of play time to start breaking them into the college game time system ( playing in front of large crowds, running the DDM,etc.).

I think as the season progresses Patterson will be the go to guy, every year it seems as if Pat starts to put up really solid numbers when we start SEC play, Wall will most likely put up some ridiculous numbers against all the "scrub" teams and then his numbers will hopefully stay consistant but i just feel like Patterson will truely flourish once SEC play starts, and i expect him to have a big game against UNC this year, because were gonna need it. UNC's Ed Davis and Marcus Ginyard leading some pretty good freshmen will make for a good match up this year in Rupp which i still expect us to win because Wall will just create to many problems with his speed allowing Pat and Demarcus to both put up 15 plus.

looks like i got a little off topic..sorry

Patterson simply isn't living up to the hype, the star on this team now is WALL. Cousin is a close second. Patterson and Miller need to pick it up........

Patrick is learning to play the game facing the basket.......something he has never done in his entire career.

In high school and the last two years he has played with his back to the basket.

Patrick has a good basketball IQ and a sense of the game. He will be just fine once he gets comfortable.

Not to worry, give him some time. I do expect that in some games this year we will see him in the paint. Coach Cal, unlike the last few years, is a master at adapting, improvising, and overcoming adversity on the court

Gang, let's remember the warning issued by Coach Cal. We are not going to like what we see in the first few weeks. I think we need a lot more patience and a lot loss worry over PPat or any of the others. The cake doesn't taste good until it bakes for a while!

Thanks, NC Cat. I was going to post essentially the very same thing but you saved me the effort. I agree completely.

You've got that right. I was impressed by his admission that not practicing free throws cost Memphis the championship and that he'd never do that again. The last guy seemed to be stubborn to the point of cutting his nose off to spite his face.

I have no fear that Patterson will be fine. I still have confidence in him with the ball in his hand.

That's a bunch of BS period..........

I agree that Wall is amazing and Cousins is a freak, but Patrick Patterson is the real deal as well and remember that i told you that. He's basically playing a new position in a new system.............

I put nearly zero emphasis on exhibition games in general. When SEC time comes along and we need a score, rebound or stop, Patrick will be that man.
